The Wodehouse Wanderer - The Edale Skyline and Kinderscout.

Hello office chair ramblers and experienced hikers alike. Today we take in The Edale Skyline and Kinderscout in the beautiful Peak District. Edale is the start (or Southern end) of the Pennine Way in the village there's a youth hostel and several B&B's, pubs and two cafes. It's a popular camping village previously voted village of the year, with two major campsites and many others in the surrounding area. Well worth a stay, it's an area frequented by both walkers of all abilities and fell runners due to its exceptional beauty.

As the crow flies and about 5 miles away. Kinderscout has a nature reserve status, it's the highest point in the Peak District at 636 metres above sea level. From this vantage point on a good day you can see the city of Manchester, Winter Hill near Bolton and even the mountains of Snowdonia. The plateau was the scene of the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass in 1932, in 2003 the right to roam in uncultivated land became enshrined in law. Kinder Downfall is the tallest waterfall in the Peak District at 30 metres.

Mermaids Pool - image by Local Guide Paul (parenthesis) from Google Maps

Kinder Downfall is little more than a trickle in Summer in later months it can be very impressive and when frozen is a challenge to climbers using both crampons and ice axes. Mermaids Pool at the bottom is a small stretch of water said to be inhabited by a mermaid, who will grant anyone that sees her on Easter Eve the gift of immortality, form an orderly queue! On Kinder Low there is an unexplored Bronze Age Bowl Barrow so obviously since time in memoriam people have taken in this magnificent vista!
